Melding art and science to make the perfect bean for brewing!

The “art” of it all, is a matter of knowing the bean inside and out.  It’s about the elevation, climate, and soil in which the bean was grown.  It’s about bean density. It’s about crop cycle.

Then it’s taking all this information and learning how each bean reacts to heat during the roasting cycles.   OR  (Then it’s taking all this information and learning how each bean reacts to heat application during roasting.)  Some beans need more of an aggressive start.  Other beans need to start out slower then get ramped up at the end of the roast cycle. 

An “artful” roastmaster  also knows the bean’s characteristic cup profile. In other words, how it should taste.   The roastmaster needs to find the bean’s sweet spot, that perfect taste.  The goal of roasting is to produce the character and flavor nature intended for that particular bean.   

Nailing the profile for a particular bean is indeed an art, but it’s also nearly impossible to nail it every time if scientific equipment is not being used!  Do we have your dander up?  Curious?


BBQ + Clothes Dryer = Coffee Roaster.  The roaster itself is a cross between a BBQ grill and a dryer!  The roaster drum goes round and round like a dryer, and the flame under it is like the gas grill you have in your backyard.

All of our roasts are computer driven.  The computer checks the temperature of the beans several times a second.  Depending on the temperature reading for the roast profile we programmed for that particular bean at that particular time, the computer increases or decreases the flame under the roaster.  THAT”S the scientific part …the computer doing things that are humanly impossible to do and doing it the same EVERY TIME

For us at Crazy Sisters, the ART part of it is selecting the bean, monitoring every step in the process, programming the computer to lower or raise the temperature at the proper time throughout the roast cycle to get the result we want. We have separate roast profiles for every bean, because every bean is different! At Crazy Sisters Coffee Roasters we believe both ART and SCIENCE are an integral part of coffee roasting.
